In Muskogee, Oklahoma, a young boy's life was tragically cut short in a devastating act of violence that also claimed the lives of his grandparents. Dalton Douglas Janway, an 11-year-old Caucasian male, was killed on June 26, 2023, in what law enforcement officials have described as a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded at the family's home, sending shockwaves through the quiet community.
That evening, a 911 call was made from the residence by a woman, later identified as Dalton's
68-year-old grandmother, Terry Lynn Janway, reporting a disturbance involving a gun. When Muskogee police officers arrived at the home, they discovered the body of Dalton's 69-year-old grandfather, Jack Janway, in a hallway. Shortly after their arrival, another gunshot was heard from within the house.
Upon further investigation, officers found the bodies of both Dalton and Terry Janway. Investigators believe that Terry Janway shot and killed her husband and grandson before taking her own life. The preliminary medical examiner's report indicated that Dalton had sustained two gunshot wounds. Terry Janway's death was ruled a suicide. As the perpetrator was deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the killings. The motive for the tragic event remains unclear, and police had no record of previous domestic disturbances at the Janway home.
The Janway family was well-known and respected in the Muskogee community, where Jack Janway was a long-time chiropractor. Dalton, a fifth-grade student at Sadler Arts Academy, was remembered by his principal as a precious child and a good friend to everyone, known for his loving smile and kindness to others. The tragic loss was deeply felt by his classmates, teachers, and the broader community, including the mayor, who expressed his shock and sorrow over the incident, particularly the involvement of a child. The family also had ties to the NASCAR community, as Dalton was the nephew of driver Jimmie Johnson.
