On the evening of September 26, 2022, a dispute that began over a disabled vehicle tragically escalated, ending the life of 33-year-old Felipe Palacios Jr. in southeast Oklahoma City. The Hispanic male was with a friend when the car they were in broke down at the intersection of S.E. 43rd Street and High Street.
Another driver, Jason Wayne Mercer, 35, became angered that the stalled vehicle was obstructing the roadway. A verbal confrontation ensued between Palacios and Mercer.
The argument quickly intensified, leading Mercer to pull out a gun and fatally shoot Palacios. Emergency services were called to the scene around 6:22 p.m., but Palacios was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.
Initially, Mercer fled the location of the shooting. However, in a turn of events, he returned to the scene a short time later and surrendered to the Oklahoma City Police Department officers who had responded. He was taken into custody and subsequently booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on a complaint of first-degree murder. The case proceeded through the legal system, where Mercer ultimately entered a blind plea and received a sentence of life in prison. During the court proceedings, Palacios' family, including his young children, delivered emotional victim impact statements, describing him as a loving and protective family man.
