In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on the night of March 17, 2016, a domestic dispute tragically escalated, leading to the death of 23-year-old Jevontese Riley, a Black / African American male. The incident began inside a residence near 19th and Center, where 39-year-old Carl Barrett was involved in a heated argument with his girlfriend. As the confrontation reportedly turned physical, the girlfriend's daughter became concerned and called her brother for assistance.
Responding to his sister's
plea, the son of Barrett's girlfriend arrived at the house, accompanied by a couple of friends, one of whom was Jevontese Riley. Their arrival led to a brief confrontation with Barrett. Feeling threatened, Barrett went into his bedroom and returned with a medium to large frame silver revolver. Seeing Barrett's weapon, one of Riley's friends, who was also armed, drew his own gun.
In the ensuing moments, Barrett and the armed friend began shooting at each other. During this exchange of gunfire, Jevontese Riley was struck by multiple bullets. Despite being gravely wounded, he managed to leave the house but collapsed a short distance away, just a few houses to the north. Emergency life-saving efforts were performed, but Riley succumbed to his injuries at the scene. An autopsy later revealed he had sustained five gunshot wounds caused by two separate bullets. A 17-year-old boy was also shot and wounded inside the residence but was able to flee and call for help.
Following the fatal shooting, Carl Barrett was arrested and faced legal consequences for his role in the incident. He was charged with two criminal counts, including first-degree reckless homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. The investigation concluded that Riley was caught in the crossfire of a shootout that erupted from a domestic quarrel he was not initially a part of.
