In the summer of 2019, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Kenosha, Wisconsin, forever altering the lives of a local family. On June 17, five-year-old Dakari Weldon, a young African American boy, was at a residence where a day like any other took a tragic turn. A single gunshot shattered the quiet, and in its wake, Dakari was left with a fatal wound.
In the panic and fear that followed, he was driven to Froedtert South Hospital.
Two men, later identified as his uncles, dropped the critically injured child at the hospital and then departed the scene. The hospital staff worked to save the young boy, but his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The abrupt and anonymous nature of his arrival immediately launched a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The two men who left him at the hospital were quickly sought for questioning.
The investigation led to the arrest of two 24-year-old men, confirmed to be family members of the young victim. One of the men was taken into custody on suspicion of homicide by the negligent handling of a firearm, while the other faced a charge of leaving a loaded firearm within the access of a child. The grandfather of Dakari Weldon spoke to the media, expressing his belief that the shooting was a terrible accident and that his sons had fled the hospital out of overwhelming fear.
