In a quiet neighborhood in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the night of October 19, 2021, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 17-year-old Hispanic male Sebastian Perez-Alvarez. What began as an ordinary evening ended in a tragedy that left a community in shock and mourning.
Just before 11 p.m., dispatchers received a distressing 911 call filled with unintelligible screaming. When officers arrived at the residence in the 600 block of 40th Place, they discovered a grim scene.
Inside the small, 900-square-foot home, Sebastian Perez-Alvarez and another individual, 18-year-old Marian Pizarro, had been fatally shot. Two other people, 35-year-old Luz Pizarro-Perez and a 14-year-old boy, were also found with critical gunshot wounds but survived the initial attack.
Investigators quickly identified the person responsible for the carnage as 24-year-old Jostin Gutierrez-Pagan. The Kenosha Police Department stated that the incident appeared to be domestic-related. Evidence suggested that Gutierrez-Pagan shot the four individuals before turning the gun on himself. His body was also found within the home.
The aftermath of the shooting left residents of the normally peaceful area stunned. In the wake of the violence, Kenosha's mayor acknowledged the significant increase in homicides that year, noting that a majority of them stemmed from domestic violence. As the investigation concluded that the suspect had taken his own life, there were no arrests to be made in the double homicide of Sebastian Perez-Alvarez and Marian Pizarro.
