On a spring evening in Kenosha, Wisconsin, what began as a night out with friends turned into a tragedy that would claim the life of 22-year-old Kevin T. Donaldson. On April 18, 2021, Donaldson, a Black male, was at the Somers House Tavern with his friends, Cedric Gaston and Atkeem Stevenson. The atmosphere in the busy tavern took a dark turn following a physical altercation.
Another patron, Rakayo Alandis Vinson, then 24 years old, had been involved in a scuffle and was removed from the
establishment. In an act of retaliation, Vinson returned to the tavern shortly after being kicked out. He walked onto the patio and opened fire. The chaotic scene that erupted resulted in the deaths of Donaldson, Gaston, and Stevenson, and left three other individuals wounded. Donaldson was involved in an exchange of gunfire with Vinson outside the tavern and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement launched an investigation that quickly led to a person of interest. Rakayo Alandis Vinson was arrested in connection with the deadly shooting. Authorities pieced together evidence, including surveillance footage, which showed Vinson's return to the bar and the subsequent shooting. His wallet was also found at the scene. He was charged with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
The case proceeded to trial, where prosecutors argued that Vinson's actions were a direct result of a bruised ego following the earlier fight. The defense claimed that Vinson acted in self-defense. In January 2022, a jury found Rakayo Vinson guilty on all charges. He was later sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for the deaths of Kevin T. Donaldson and his two friends.
