On May 5, 2021, the life of Jan Valerie Hogoboom Hyatt, a 37-year-old White female from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was tragically cut short. Born on June 27, 1983, at Cherry Point Naval Hospital in North Carolina, Jan's early life was shaped by her father's service in the Marine Corps. The family later relocated to Madison, Wisconsin, in 1985, where she would spend her formative years.
After graduating from Madison West Senior High School in 2001, she went on to build a life in the community, eventually working for the State of Wisconsin's Department of Workforce Development for over six years.
Jan was a mother to her daughter, Samantha, and was known for her vibrant personality and diverse interests, which included fashion, crafting, and music. She married Andrew Hyatt on June 18, 2016. However, their relationship would ultimately have a devastating conclusion.
The circumstances of Jan's death were the result of a domestic violence incident that culminated in a murder-suicide. She was found deceased in her Sun Prairie home from gunshot wounds. Her estranged husband, Andrew Hyatt, was also found dead at the scene. Authorities identified Andrew Hyatt as the perpetrator in Jan's death before taking his own life.
Given that the suspect in her murder was also deceased, there were no arrests made in connection with the case. The incident was officially classified as a murder-suicide by investigators. In the wake of this tragedy, Jan's community and family came together to honor her memory and raise awareness about the devastating impact of domestic violence. A walk was organized in her honor to commemorate her life and to raise funds for her daughter and to support other victims of domestic violence.
