On August 13, 1974, Paula Atkinson Cupit, a 24-year-old white female employed as a maid at The Abbey Resort in Fontana, Wisconsin, was found brutally murdered in one of the resort's guest rooms. Her body was discovered by a colleague after she had been missing for several hours. An autopsy revealed that she had been sexually assaulted, stabbed in the heart, and strangled with such force that her neck was broken.
