In the early morning hours of November 21, 2022, a devastating incident unfolded inside a home on North 87th Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, leading to the death of 44-year-old Quiana Mann, a Black / African American female. Mann was in the basement doing laundry when she was fatally shot. The bullet struck her in the face, causing a wound to her right eye that exited through the back of her head.
The initial report to authorities, made by Mann's 26-year-old daughter, suggested an
accidental shooting. The suspect, Mann's 10-year-old son, initially claimed he was twirling the gun around his finger when it accidentally discharged. However, this account was questioned by family members who were concerned about the boy's history of behavioral and rage issues. The day after the shooting, relatives contacted investigators to voice their doubts about the boy's story.
Following these concerns, the son admitted to investigators that he had intentionally aimed the gun at his mother. His motive was reportedly anger over being woken up early and his mother's refusal to purchase a virtual reality headset for him from Amazon. Tragically, the day after his mother's death, the boy used her Amazon account to order the headset. He had retrieved the firearm from a lockbox to which he had a key.
The 10-year-old was taken into custody and charged with first-degree reckless homicide. Despite his age, a decision was made to charge him as an adult, a move supported by a psychological evaluation that deemed him competent to stand trial. The boy's family has expressed profound shock and sorrow, revealing that he had been receiving help for his behavioral problems. Family members also reported a history of disturbing behavior, including instances of animal cruelty and starting a fire.
