In the early morning hours of July 6, 2023, a tragedy unfolded in a Shorewood, Wisconsin, home that cut short the life of Tashika Scott-Dixon, a 41-year-old Black/African American woman. The incident, which occurred around 4:30 a.m. near Murray Avenue and Lake Bluff Boulevard, was an act of domestic violence that left a family shattered. Scott-Dixon, a financial wellness specialist at Summit Credit Union, was known by loved ones as a beautiful spirit, a loving mother, and an amazing
sister-in-law and friend.
That morning, Scott-Dixon was fatally shot inside her residence. Another woman, identified as her daughter, was also shot during the incident but thankfully survived her injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The quiet neighborhood was disrupted by the violence that had erupted within the home.
The primary suspect in the shooting was identified by authorities as Tashika's 44-year-old husband, Rico Dixon. Shortly after the shooting, around 5 a.m., he was found deceased in a vehicle at Lincoln Park in Milwaukee. His death was the result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, turning the tragic event into a murder-suicide. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed the identities of both Tashika Scott-Dixon and Rico Dixon.
In the wake of this devastating loss, family and friends gathered to honor Tashika's memory at a funeral service held on July 18, 2023, at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee. The community was left to grapple with the profound impact of domestic violence, a recurring tragedy that this incident brought into sharp focus. Community leaders and organizations urged those experiencing domestic violence to seek help and know the warning signs, such as jealous or controlling behavior and threatening messages.
