In the summer of 2022, a quiet street in West Allis, Wisconsin, became the scene of a tragedy that cut short the life of a young mother. On the afternoon of July 18, 2022, police responded to a call of shots fired and discovered the body of 24-year-old Ninoshka Maestre Lozada in the backyard of her home. She had been shot multiple times and, despite the efforts of first responders, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Hispanic female, Lozada was a mother to four children, two of whom were inside the home when their mother was killed.
The investigation quickly pointed to a domestic dispute as the motive behind the fatal shooting. The suspect was identified as Wilson Medina Cruz, the 25-year-old father of three of Lozada's children. Authorities revealed the couple had been in a relationship for two to three years, and the violence erupted from a dispute concerning another woman with whom Medina Cruz was involved. The day after the shooting, detectives and SWAT personnel located and arrested Medina Cruz at a local hotel.
In the wake of the tragedy, Lozada's death was highlighted as part of an alarming two-week span in Milwaukee County where six women of color were killed in domestic violence incidents, all involving gunfire. The case against Wilson Medina Cruz proceeded through the justice system, culminating in a guilty plea to a charge of first-degree reckless homicide. Nearly a year after Lozada's death, on July 6, 2023, he was sentenced to 24 years in prison, to be followed by 15 years of extended supervision. During the sentencing, Medina Cruz, through an interpreter, expressed remorse to the victim's family, stating that his apology came from the deepest part of his heart. Lozada's mother, Carmen Lozada, also spoke, describing the profound and lasting impact of her daughter's murder on their family and, most significantly, on the children left without a mother.
