Malaysha B. Smith, a 20-year-old woman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, tragically lost her life on April 7, 2021, in a violent incident that occurred at a Citgo gas station near North 27th Street and West Capitol Drive. Two other individuals, a 27-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man, were also injured in the shooting.
The events leading up to the shooting began with an argument inside the gas station between Jeffrey Vaughn and Michael White, a 26-year-old man from Illinois. Surveillance footage and witness statements revealed that Vaughn, who was armed, got into a physical altercation with White. During the struggle, White managed to wrestle the gun away from Vaughn. Following the incident, Michael White was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree reckless injury, and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. White, who also sustained a gunshot wound during the altercation, was hospitalized and remained in custody. The Milwaukee police also made a second arrest in connection with the shooting, although the role of this individual in the incident was not immediately clear.
