On the evening of July 21, 2023, a road rage incident unfolded in the Uptown neighborhood of Dallas, Texas.
Lutfi, who was unarmed, attempted to intervene and do the right thing. During the confrontation, he was shot. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital for treatment of his critical injuries.
Lutfi fought for his life for two days with his parents by his side. He succumbed to his injuries on July 23, 2023. His death prompted an outpouring of support from his community. A colleague of his father organized a fundraiser to help the family, highlighting the profound impact Lutfi had on his friends and coworkers at United Airlines.
Following the shooting, Dallas police launched an investigation that led to the arrest of a suspect, 47-year-old John Luster. In October 2023, a Dallas County grand jury indicted Luster on a charge of murder. The case was proceeding through the court system as of that indictment.
