Rufino Olmos, a 45-year-old man, died on August 30, 2022, in Dallas, Texas. The incident occurred around 8:00 AM when the U.S. Marshals Task Force, which included members of the Dallas Police Department, received information that Olmos was at the La Quinta Hotel at 8300 John W. Carpenter Freeway. Olmos had felony warrants out of the Austin Police Department for Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child and Indecency with a Child.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they saw Olmos get
into an SUV and attempted to block him in. Officers repeatedly told Olmos to show his hands, but he did not comply. A Dallas Police Officer used a pry bar to break the right back window of the SUV and saw Olmos with a black pistol in his hand, pointed backward at his chest. Officers heard one gunshot, and Olmos was taken to a local hospital by Dallas Fire Rescue, where he was pronounced dead at 8:31 a.m. No officers discharged their weapons, and no officers were injured.
The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is conducting a death in custody investigation. The Office of Police Community Oversight and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office were made aware of the incident, and the District Attorney’s Office will conduct their own investigation.
There have been no arrests, suspects, or litigations related to Olmos' death as of now. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
