On the last day of February in 2022, the life of 39-year-old Alexis Fitzgerald McGregor, a Black/African American male, was cut short in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The father of four was at a gas station near the intersection of Green Bay Avenue and Capitol Drive when an argument erupted between him and another man. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
The man McGregor argued with, Dreshawn Freeman, then 26 years old, retrieved a handgun.
As McGregor began to walk and then run away, Freeman fired two shots. One of the bullets struck McGregor in the spine, causing him to collapse. Surveillance footage from the gas station captured Freeman then approaching McGregor and appearing to punch him in the head. Freeman then rolled McGregor onto his back. By the time police arrived, McGregor was unresponsive.
First responders found Freeman kneeling beside McGregor and he was taken into custody at the scene. McGregor, having sustained two gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead. The encounter, from the initial argument to the fatal shooting, was recorded by the gas station's security cameras. While the footage documented the violent interaction, the specific cause of the initial disagreement between the two men was not publicly detailed in court filings.
In August 2023, Dreshawn Freeman, then 28, pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree reckless homicide. He was subsequently sentenced to 12 years in prison for the death of Alexis McGregor. As part of his sentence, he was also ordered to serve eight years of extended supervision following his release. At the time of his sentencing, Freeman was credited with 592 days already served in custody.
