In the fall of 2020, the life of Marcus Colvin, a 49-year-old African American man, was tragically cut short on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona. On the afternoon of October 9th, a confrontation unfolded near the intersection of 27th Avenue and Northern Avenue. The dispute involved Colvin, another man later identified as 22-year-old Victor Vargas, and an unidentified woman who was with Vargas.
During the course of the altercation, Vargas allegedly produced a firearm and shot Colvin.
First responders arrived at the scene around 2 p.m. to find Colvin suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Vargas and his female companion fled the area before law enforcement could arrive.
Phoenix police quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to identify Victor Vargas as the primary suspect in Colvin's death. Investigators tracked Vargas to a residence, but before they could apprehend him, he entered a vehicle and drove away. A specialized unit, the Special Assignment Unit, initiated a pursuit.
The pursuit continued into the Quartzsite area, where the vehicle carrying Vargas eventually came to a stop. Law enforcement officers were then able to take Victor Vargas into custody without further incident. Following his arrest, he was transported and booked at the La Paz County Jail on suspicion of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Marcus Colvin.
