Laron D. Bynum, an 18-year-old from Milwaukee, was tragically shot and killed on July 22, 2022, in Madison, Wisconsin. The incident occurred on Madison's north side, where Bynum was found inside a stolen vehicle at the intersection of Vahlen Street and North Sherman Avenue. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Bynum died from homicidal firearm-related trauma.
The Madison Police Department described the shooting as a targeted incident, although the exact motive remains unclear. Initial investigations revealed that the shooting might be connected to another incident in a nearby residential area, which led to the lockdown of the Vera Court Neighborhood Center. Shell casings were found at both locations, indicating a possible link between the two events.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Madison Police Department launched an extensive investigation. Aquille Lowe, 29, was later arrested and charged in connection with Bynum's death. Initially facing charges of first-degree intentional homicide by use of a dangerous weapon as a party to a crime, Lowe eventually pleaded guilty to first-degree reckless homicide as part of a plea deal. This deal resulted in the dismissal of several other charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and one count of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Lowe was sentenced to 12 years in prison, followed by 13 years of extended supervision. The case highlighted ongoing concerns about gun violence in the community, with local authorities expressing frustration and sadness over the loss of another young life. The investigation into Bynum's death underscored the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing targeted shootings and the broader issue of gun violence in Madison.
