In the late summer of 2022, the life of James Michael Turner, a 35-year-old male, was cut short in Madison, Wisconsin. On the night of August 26th, events unfolded that would end in his death from what the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office would later describe as firearm-related trauma. Turner was involved in an incident that was determined to be a home invasion in the 1700 block of Packers Avenue.
During the course of this event, Turner was shot by the resident of the apartment he
had entered, a man identified as Jose Gomez. The preliminary results of an autopsy confirmed that the cause of Turner's death was the gunshot wounds he sustained. The Madison Police Chief, Shon Barnes, publicly stated that Wisconsin's Castle Doctrine could be a factor in the case. This legal principle provides residents with the right to use deadly force against an intruder in their home, potentially shielding Gomez from homicide charges.
While the investigation into Turner's death proceeded, it brought other matters to light within the apartment where the shooting occurred. Law enforcement discovered drugs on the premises, leading to legal trouble for Jose Gomez, albeit on different grounds. Though he was not charged in relation to Turner's death, Gomez faced charges for drug-related offenses. The case, therefore, highlighted the complexities of self-defense laws while also leading to an unrelated criminal prosecution.
