In the early morning hours of July 18, 2015, a violent act shattered the pre-dawn stillness on Interstate 5 near Mount Vernon, Washington, claiming the life of 20-year-old Leonardo Salinas-Lopez, a Hispanic male. He and his 21-year-old cousin, Miguel A. Lopez, were traveling northbound, heading home from a party. Salinas-Lopez was in the front passenger seat, with his cousin at the wheel, and another friend in the back.
As they neared the College Way exit around 3:00 a.m., a
dark-colored, king cab pickup truck with Washington license plates pulled up alongside their vehicle. Without any apparent interaction, an occupant of the truck opened fire on the cousins' car. Both Leonardo Salinas-Lopez and Miguel A. Lopez were struck by the gunfire and died at the scene. The passenger in the backseat miraculously escaped injury. When the car came to a stop, he jumped out and ran for help, telling authorities that they did not know the shooter.
The interstate was closed for hours as the Washington State Patrol conducted their investigation, with K-9 units searching the two-mile crime scene for shell casings. The families of the two young men were left devastated, pleading for answers and for the perpetrator to be brought to justice. Leonardo's mother, speaking through a translator, expressed her profound pain and her wish for the person responsible to pay for their actions. His sister and girlfriend also shared their heartbreak with the community, remembering him as a loved one taken from them far too soon.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification of the suspect vehicle and the person or persons responsible for the double homicide. Despite these efforts, the truck involved in the shooting remained at large, and no immediate arrests were made.
