Miguel A. Lopez, a 21-year-old resident of Mount Vernon, WA, tragically lost his life on July 18, 2015. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on Interstate 5 near the College Way exit in Mount Vernon. Miguel was driving a vehicle with his cousin, Leonardo Salinas-Lopez, who was 20 years old. The two men were returning from a party when a dark-colored, king cab truck with Washington plates pulled up alongside their car and opened fire.
Both Miguel and Leonardo were killed in the drive-by shooting, while a third person in the vehicle managed to escape and call for help.
The Washington State Patrol immediately launched an investigation into the double homicide. They closed the northbound side of I-5 to search for evidence, including spent shell casings, and appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects. Despite these efforts, the truck involved in the shooting remained at large, and no immediate arrests were made.
Family members of the victims expressed their grief and called for justice. Leonardo's girlfriend, Kassandra Morales, and his sister, Esbaide Salidas, spoke about the impact of the loss on their family. Miguel's aunt, Berenice Lopez, who only spoke Spanish, conveyed through a translator her hope for a swift arrest and justice for her nephew and son.
In the years following the incident, the case remained under investigation. The community and the families of the victims continued to seek answers and closure. Fundraising efforts were initiated to help cover the funeral expenses for both Miguel and Leonardo. The tragic event highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence and the need for effective measures to prevent such senseless acts.
