In the quiet, rural town of Hay, Washington, the tranquility was shattered on the morning of August 8, 2017, by a tragic event that claimed the life of 66-year-old Dennis Moore. The male victim was found deceased at his home alongside his wife, in what authorities would later describe as a murder-suicide.
Initial reports suggested a sorrowful motive behind the grim discovery. Dennis’s wife, Janice K.
Moore, 63, had placed a call to 911, informing the dispatcher that she had just shot her husband. She implied that her actions were a mercy killing, stating that he was suffering from cancer and she wanted to end his pain. When sheriff's deputies and paramedics arrived at their residence, about 30 miles west of Pullman, they found both Dennis and Janice Moore deceased. Both had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head from a small-caliber pistol, with Janice’s wound appearing to be self-inflicted.
However, the narrative of a compassionate, albeit desperate, act began to unravel as the investigation delved deeper. A review of Dennis Moore’s health records by the Whitman County Coroner's Office yielded no evidence to support the claim that he was suffering from a life-threatening illness. The coroner, Pete Martin, confirmed that Mr. Moore had no known critical health conditions at the time of his death.
In a somber turn, the investigation unearthed a different and more pressing struggle in the couple’s lives. Authorities discovered that the Moores, who had been married for about three decades and lived alone, were entangled in severe financial difficulties. It was revealed that at least one of their properties was on the brink of foreclosure.
