In the early morning hours of November 4, 2017, a 45-year-old White / Caucasian man named James Ronnie Timmons was out playing the popular mobile game Pokémon Go near the intersection of South 66th and South Tyler Street in Tacoma, Washington. A well-known and beloved figure in his community, Timmons was a dedicated volunteer for the athletics program at Mount Tahoma High School.
He was known for his kindness and his role in managing the concession stand and being an active member of the booster club.
At approximately 2:25 a.m., the quiet of the neighborhood was broken by the sound of gunshots. A witness who heard the shots quickly dialed 911. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Timmons lying on the sidewalk, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Tacoma General Hospital for medical attention, but tragically, he was pronounced dead about an hour after the shooting. The community was left in shock and mourning for a man described by those who knew him as gentle, humble, and possessing a special innocence.
In the wake of his death, friends and family remembered Timmons as someone who would give you the last quarter in his pocket. He had been facing personal hardships, having recently lost both his mother and grandmother, and was living with a supportive family friend. The Tacoma Police Department launched an extensive investigation into his murder, but have been unable to identify any suspects or determine a clear motive for the senseless act of violence. Authorities have stated that Timmons was not involved in any illegal activities and had no known enemies. Vigils and memorials were held to honor his memory as the community hoped for justice. To this day, the case remains unsolved, and the search for those responsible for his death continues.
