In the early hours of May 8, 2020, the life of Nelvin Lenard Tucker, a 51-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in Tacoma, Washington. The events that led to his death began to unfold inside his apartment at the Scenic Pines complex, stemming from a dispute with a man he had treated like a son.
Nelvin had allowed 27-year-old Emilio Calvillo to stay with him at his residence. However, tensions arose, and Nelvin had asked Calvillo to move out.
Just days before the fatal incident, a neighbor overheard Nelvin telling Calvillo to leave and not return, to which Calvillo allegedly responded with a threat of shooting him. On the night of the shooting, Nelvin's daughter was at the apartment and witnessed her father scolding Calvillo for playing music too loudly and being disrespectful. Nelvin demanded his apartment keys back and told Calvillo to leave.
Hours later, around 1:20 a.m., neighbors heard a loud popping noise. Peeking through their peephole, they saw Calvillo leaving Nelvin's apartment with his hand tucked into a hooded sweatshirt before he ran off. The concerned neighbors tried to contact Nelvin by phone and by knocking on his door. After a few moments, Nelvin managed to open his door before collapsing. In his final moments, he uttered Calvillo's name and asked his neighbors to call his daughter. Paramedics arrived and transported Nelvin to Tacoma General Hospital, where he succumbed to a gunshot wound.
An investigation was launched, and a warrant for Emilio Calvillo's arrest was issued. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. When Nelvin's daughter called Calvillo after the shooting, he claimed to have heard gunshots as he was leaving but refused to disclose his location and then stopped answering her calls. In August 2021, Emilio Vincente Calvillo pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. During the sentencing, the motive behind the killing remained unclear, as Calvillo offered no explanation for his actions against the man who had shown him kindness and generosity.
