In the early morning hours of July 5, 1998, a scene of terror unfolded at the Trang Dai Cafe in Tacoma, Washington, forever altering the lives of those present. Among the victims of this violent outburst was a 21-year-old Asian woman named Tuyen Vo, who was working as a waitress at the establishment. The festive atmosphere of the karaoke bar was shattered when three masked gunmen stormed in, indiscriminately opening fire on the patrons.
The chaos and gunfire resulted in the deaths of four men inside the cafe.
As the horror unfolded within the main area of the cafe, Tuyen Vo sought to escape the carnage. She made her way to the back of the building, likely in a desperate attempt to find safety. However, her bid for survival was tragically cut short. Two additional gunmen had been stationed outside the rear of the cafe, and as she emerged, they took her life. In total, the coordinated attack claimed five lives and left five others wounded in what would become known as one of Tacoma's most violent mass slayings.
The ensuing investigation into the massacre pointed towards a conflict between rival Asian gangs as the underlying motive. Law enforcement officials believed the gunmen were targeting a specific individual who was among those injured in the attack, with the violence stemming from a personal dispute. On July 18, 1998, a significant police operation was launched, involving searches of nine homes and a hunt for eight suspects. This led to the arrest of four individuals, with a fifth being apprehended the following day.
The investigation took a dramatic turn when authorities closed in on the suspected ringleader, 22-year-old Ri Le. As police prepared to apprehend him, Ri Le was involved in a murder-suicide with his 17-year-old half-brother, Khanh Trinh, who was also one of the gunmen positioned at the back of the cafe. The tragic event at the Trang Dai Cafe left a lasting scar on the community, a grim reminder of the senseless violence that claimed the life of Tuyen Vo and four others.
