In the summer of 2021, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 17-year-old Daniel Tovar-Moreno, a Hispanic/Latino male. On the evening of July 7th, in the parking lot of an AMC movie theater in Bellevue, Washington, a confrontation ended in tragedy. Daniel was shot at point-blank range with a sawed-off shotgun, the blast to his chest proving fatal. He was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but succumbed to his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the assailant was seen pacing between his vehicle and Daniel's, a menacing presence that deterred witnesses from rendering aid before he fled the scene.
The investigation swiftly led Bellevue detectives to a suspect. The following day, on July 8, 2021, authorities arrested Carlos Anthony Espinoza, then 18, at his residence in Renton. A search of his vehicle and home uncovered incriminating evidence, including a shotgun in the backseat of his car, a hacksaw, and a removed barrel segment in his bedroom. This discovery tied him directly to the modified weapon used in the murder of Daniel Tovar-Moreno.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Carlos Anthony Espinoza was charged with murder in the second degree with a firearm enhancement and unlawful possession of a short-barreled shotgun. In November 2023, he accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to the charges against him. This plea also included an additional charge of assault in the third degree, stemming from a separate incident in June 2021 where he had threatened a girl he was dating with a shotgun. On January 26, 2024, a King County Superior Court judge sentenced Espinoza to 22 years in confinement for his crimes, bringing a close to the case that ended a young life with a promising future.
