In the spring of 2014, the life of a young mother in Louisville, Kentucky, was tragically cut short, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated. Crystal Parker, a 25-year-old female, was found deceased in her apartment in the Shawnee Gardens complex on May 19, 2014. The cause of her death was a single gunshot wound. In a particularly heartbreaking detail, her two young children were present in the home at the time of the incident and were discovered there with their mother's body.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on her estranged boyfriend, Shahied Ditto. Police arrested Ditto, who was 23 years old at the time, and charged him with murder and burglary. Investigators alleged that Ditto had forced his way into Parker's apartment and shot her. The motive, they suggested, stemmed from a tumultuous and ongoing domestic situation. The couple's relationship had recently ended, and they were reportedly scheduled to appear in Family Court for a child support hearing on the day of the murder. The day she was killed, Parker had also sought a protective order against Ditto.
The case against Shahied Ditto proceeded to trial, where the prosecution presented evidence of a history of domestic violence and argued that the crime scene, which appeared to have been ransacked, may have been staged to look like a burglary. A critical piece of testimony came from Parker's five-year-old daughter, who told the court she heard her parents arguing before the gunshot and identified Ditto's voice, at one point stating, 'Shahied killed my Mama.' However, the defense raised questions about the reliability of a child's testimony and argued that Ditto had an alibi, claiming he was at a child support hearing at the time of the murder. After deliberating for over five hours, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on both the murder and burglary charges. In October 2015, Shahied Ditto was acquitted of the murder of Crystal Parker, leaving the case officially unresolved and her family still searching for justice.
