In what was described by a neighbor as a nearly 'perfect family,' a quiet Sunday in an upscale Louisville, Kentucky neighborhood was shattered by a horrific act of violence. On March 20, 2016, 32-year-old Billie Jo 'BJ' Hettinger, a White female, was tragically killed in her home. Her life, along with those of her two young children, was cut short in a shocking murder-suicide orchestrated by her husband.
The incident unfolded in their Saratoga Springs Place residence, leaving a community in mourning and searching for answers that might never come.
The events of that day were grimly pieced together by authorities who responded to a fire alarm at the Hettinger home. Firefighters arrived to find multiple fires intentionally set on different floors, a clear indication of arson. It was only after they entered the burning house that the full scope of the tragedy was discovered. The bodies of Billie Jo and her family were found inside. An investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department and the Metro Arson Bureau concluded that 33-year-old Brad Hettinger shot and killed his wife and their two children before setting the house ablaze and then turning the gun on himself.
Billie Jo, who worked in the administration department at Baptist Health and was remembered for her kind and caring demeanor, was found in the basement of their home. She had sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and head, and also suffered from thermal injuries due to the fire. The couple's two children, 5-year-old Collin and 4-year-old Courtney, were discovered in their beds, each having died from a single gunshot wound. Brad Hettinger, a former Army helicopter pilot, was found on the first floor with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The motive behind the devastating act remains unclear. Investigators found no prior history of domestic violence reports involving the couple. Family members later revealed that Brad Hettinger had been seeking help for complications associated with PTSD and that the couple had been attending marriage counseling. The community, including their church, St. Michael Catholic Church, where the children were students, was left to grapple with the immense loss of a family remembered for their involvement in the parish.
