In Louisville, Kentucky, on the evening of July 4, 2015, the life of 64-year-old Jaundora Shoulders, a Black female, came to a tragic and abrupt end. Inside her home in the Chickasaw neighborhood, near the corner of 40th and Kentucky streets, she was shot and killed. The incident that unfolded was not a mystery for law enforcement, as the initial report came from the perpetrator himself.
Jaundora's husband, 73-year-old Charles Shoulders, dialed 911 shortly after 8 p.m.
and informed the operator that he had just shot his wife and believed she was dead. When Louisville Metro Police officers arrived at the residence in the 900 block of South 40th Street, they found Jaundora deceased at the scene. The Jefferson County Deputy Coroner later confirmed that she had died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Charles Shoulders was promptly arrested at the scene. According to police reports, he made spontaneous statements at his home, admitting to the shooting. His erratic behavior continued after he was taken to LMPD headquarters for questioning. While in an interview room, he urinated on the floor and broke a wall-mounted table, leading to an additional charge of criminal mischief.
In the days that followed, Charles Shoulders was charged with murder. He appeared in court where a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and set his bond at $100,000. In August 2016, a little over a year after Jaundora's death, her husband was found guilty of murder, terroristic threatening, and criminal mischief. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 27 years in prison for ending the life of his wife.
