In the final days of November 2021, a tragedy began to unfold on Interstate 264 in Louisville, Kentucky, that would cut short the lives of a young woman and her unborn child. Twenty-year-old Shania Lee Summers, a Black female, was a passenger in a car on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, when another vehicle pulled alongside and its occupants opened fire.
Shania was struck by the gunfire and rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition.
For three days, Shania fought for her life, but the injuries she sustained were too severe. On Friday, December 3, 2021, she succumbed to her wounds. At the time of the shooting, Shania was between 14 and 16 weeks pregnant with a daughter she had planned to name MaKinze Lee. The unborn child did not survive the attack. Shania’s mother, Shane Summer, later recounted the heartbreaking turn of events, stating that her daughter had simply gone out to get something to eat and returned with a gunshot wound to the head.
The death of Shania and her unborn daughter added to a record-breaking year of violence in Louisville. Despite the ongoing investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department and the Shively Police Department, no arrests have been made in the case. The individuals responsible for the shooting remain at large, and the case is still considered unsolved. Shania’s family has been left to grapple with their profound loss without the closure of seeing justice served. Her parents have been vocal about their grief and their desire for answers, participating in community events to honor their daughter's memory and to raise awareness about the pervasive gun violence that took her from them.
