On a tragic summer day in Inez, Kentucky, the life of 47-year-old Cainie Johnson Jr., a White male, was brutally cut short. On August 16, 2014, Johnson was found deceased alongside his girlfriend, Tina Yvonne Goble, 42, and her 8-year-old granddaughter, Trinity Janae Maynard. The gruesome discovery was made after firefighters responded to a blaze at a residence just outside the small town.
It soon became clear that the fire was intentionally set to conceal a far more sinister act.
An investigation revealed the horrifying truth: all three victims had been shot and stabbed to death before the fire was started. The authorities quickly launched a triple-homicide investigation that would lead them to two local residents, Jack D. Smith, 41, and his girlfriend, Amanda Bowen, 26. The motive for this horrific crime appeared to be robbery, as investigators found that medication and jewelry had been stolen from the home. An arrest warrant detailed that Smith and Bowen had placed knives, the stolen items, and Goble's bloody clothes into a bag and removed them from the scene.
Within days of the murders, both Smith and Bowen were arrested and faced a litany of charges, including three counts of murder and first-degree robbery. Smith was also charged with tampering with physical evidence and drug possession. Given the brutal nature of the crime, which involved the murder of a child, prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty against both defendants.
