A graduate of Butler High School and a dedicated employee at a local Circle K, he was known by friends and family as a loving father and an avid fan of the UK Wildcats and the Chicago Cubs. His sudden and violent death left a permanent void in the hearts of those who knew him.
On the evening of January 27, 2010, while working his shift
at the Circle K on LaGrange Road in Lyndon, Speers was confronted by an armed assailant. The man, later identified as Rickey Watson, entered the convenience store and demanded money. Despite Speers' compliance with the robber's demands, Watson shot him in the chest before escaping. Emergency services rushed Speers to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he passed away later that night.
The investigation into the murder of Christopher Speers moved swiftly, aided by surveillance footage from the store that captured clear images of the suspect. These images were broadcast by local news outlets, and tips from the public soon pointed law enforcement to the Millgate Apartment complex, not far from the scene of the crime.
