The fatal incident occurred on Locust Street, where Xavion was in a room
with 18-year-old William O'Bryan and another juvenile. According to police reports, O'Bryan pointed an AR-15 at Bell and pulled the trigger, inflicting a gunshot wound to his head. A witness stated that O'Bryan did not believe the weapon was loaded. Accounts of the moments leading up to the shooting vary. One version suggests O'Bryan was demonstrating how he would react to an intruder, while another claims both young men had their hands on the rifle when it discharged. Authorities noted that alcohol and marijuana were factors in the incident. After the shooting, Bell was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath, Guthrie Police allege that William O'Bryan attempted to alter the scene to suggest the gunshot was self-inflicted. He is accused of removing the shell casing and placing a handgun near Bell. Shortly after the incident, O'Bryan was arrested and faced charges of second-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence. In February 2023, a Todd County grand jury indicted him on the charge of second-degree manslaughter. O'Bryan entered a not guilty plea, and his case was set to be heard by the grand jury.
