The 36-year-old Black / African American male victim, identified in reports as Donald Lee Mattingly, was a well-known figure in the local hip-hop community where he performed under the stage names "Donnie McFly" and "Wreck D Mic." He was a father of seven children and a co-founder of the music label Unstoppable Sound. On the night of the incident, he had been attending a concert at a club in the Parkland neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky.
In the early morning hours of June 8, 2015,
around 2:00 a.m., Mattingly was leaving the venue near the intersection of 29th and Kentucky streets. He was accompanied by his close friend and business partner, Henry Anderson Jr., who performed as "Father Jah." As they departed the event, gunfire erupted, striking both men. Emergency responders transported them to the University of Louisville Hospital for urgent medical treatment. While Anderson was admitted in critical condition and fought for his life, Mattingly’s injuries proved fatal. He was pronounced dead just before noon on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, the day after the shooting.
The homicide investigation was handled by the Louisville Metro Police Department, but leads were scarce in the immediate aftermath. In the year following the murder, the case remained unsolved, classified among the city's open homicides. The victim's family, including his brother Stephen and father Donald Mattingly Sr., publicly expressed their grief and frustration with the lack of progress. Tensions in the community were highlighted when posters with the message "Snitches End Up in Ditches" appeared in the area, which the family felt discouraged witnesses from coming forward with information that could identify the shooter. As of the available records from the police department's open homicide list, no suspects had been arrested or charged in connection with Mattingly's death.
