In the spring of 2017, the life of 33-year-old Damone Omond Jones was cut short in a violent encounter in Louisville, Kentucky. On April 15th, Jones was inside a residence in the Chickasaw neighborhood when he sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Those with him at the time, reportedly not from the Louisville area, transported him to University Hospital instead of calling for emergency medical services. Their unfamiliarity with the city delayed authorities in locating the scene of the crime.
Jones ultimately succumbed to his injuries while in surgery.
The investigation into the shooting was hampered from the beginning by the difficulty in pinpointing the location where Damone Jones was shot. Days after his death, the Louisville Metro Police Department appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the crime scene, which was eventually traced to a home on Winnrose Way. Upon searching the residence, investigators discovered that the scene had been altered in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Weeks after the fatal shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Jones's death. John Johnson, who was 34 at the time, was taken into custody and charged with complicity to murder and tampering with physical evidence. According to police reports, Johnson and an unidentified accomplice were the only other individuals present in the home when Jones was shot. It is alleged that neither of the men contacted the authorities after the shooting, and instead fled the scene. While an arrest has been made, an alleged accomplice remains unidentified.
