In the late afternoon of May 22, 2017, a dispute between two groups of people in a parking lot on South Broadway in Lexington, Kentucky, escalated into a burst of gunfire. When the chaos subsided, 19-year-old Justin Lee Jenkins was found with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died at 4:23 p.m.
Another 20-year-old man was also wounded in the shooting and was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle.
Investigators quickly identified the individuals involved in the altercation. They determined that the confrontation between the two groups led to the shots being fired. Following the shooting, one of the suspects, Dylan Andrew Capps, then 20 years old, was seen leaving the area in a car. Police were able to stop the vehicle and take Capps into custody without further incident. Detectives concluded that Capps had shot both Jenkins and the other victim.
In the aftermath, a Fayette County grand jury indicted two men in connection with the fatal shooting. Dylan Andrew Capps was indicted on charges of murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of wanton endangerment. Another man, 19-year-old Keegan Tyler Newton, a friend of the victims, was also arrested and indicted on a charge of first-degree wanton endangerment. It was reported that Newton had fired shots at Capps' vehicle as he fled the scene. Both Capps and Newton were held at the Fayette County Detention Center.
