In the summer of 2017, the life of 18-year-old Jericho Moore was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 7th, a call to the Louisville Metro Police Department about an abandoned car in an alley behind the 2700 block of Dumesnil Street in the Park Hill neighborhood led to a grim discovery. Inside the vehicle, officers found blood and bullet holes, pointing to a violent encounter.
Just a few yards away, in the backyard of a vacant house, lay the body of a young man.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later identified the victim as Jericho Moore of Jeffersonville. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. While some neighbors reported hearing gunshots overnight, police could not immediately confirm when or where the shooting had occurred. Investigators believed, however, that the stolen car was connected to the homicide.
The investigation into Moore's death progressed, and about ten days later, an arrest was made. Louisville Metro Police charged 26-year-old Charles Barnes with murder and tampering with physical evidence. According to law enforcement, witnesses identified Barnes, and he had placed himself in the vicinity around the time of the killing.
Even with an arrest, the pain for Moore's family, particularly his mother, Misty Tweedy, was immense. A year after her son's death, she spoke out about the need for more support for families affected by gun violence in the city. While an arrest had been made in her son's case, she expressed that closure was still elusive as she awaited the trial.
