In the early morning hours of January 31, 2021, Dominique Fels, a 26-year-old male, was fatally shot at a Days Inn on Fern Valley Road in south Louisville. Fels was attending a birthday party at the hotel when a fight broke out between two other individuals. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, he intervened and was tragically shot multiple times.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 4:30 a.m., but Fels was pronounced dead upon their arrival.
The investigation into the death of the young father of four was handled by the LMPD Homicide Unit. In the months following the shooting, Fels' family expressed their frustration and pain, stating they felt left in the dark by the police department regarding the progress of the case. His father, Carl Fels, described his son as his best friend and vowed to continue seeking justice for him. The family's plea for better communication highlighted the struggles faced by many families of homicide victims.
More than a year after the incident, an arrest was made in connection with the shooting. The suspect was identified as Darrell Cowherd of Jeffersonville, Indiana, who was also a guest at the party. A witness identified Cowherd as the shooter, and this identification was corroborated by surveillance video from the hotel.
Ultimately, Darrell Cowherd accepted a plea deal in the case. His murder charge was reduced to manslaughter, and he was also found guilty of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and will not be eligible for probation. The resolution of the case brought little comfort to Dominique Fels' family, who expressed their anger and disappointment with the plea deal, feeling that the sentence was not sufficient justice for the loss of their loved one.
