Thaddaeus L. Hudson, a 39-year-old White/Caucasian male, was killed on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2022, in Louisville, Kentucky. The fatal shooting unfolded in the Highview neighborhood near the intersection of Smyrna Parkway and Outer Loop, close to Smyrna Elementary School. Emergency dispatchers began receiving reports of a shooting at approximately 5:52 p.m., and officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department’s 7th Division were sent to the area.
When police arrived, they encountered what authorities described as two vehicles that had been involved in some type of incident. Hudson was discovered inside one of the vehicles suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office subsequently identified the victim as Thaddaeus Hudson and determined that he had died from the gunshot injury. Police did not publicly explain what had happened between the occupants of the two vehicles before the shooting, and the early reports did not establish whether the encounter began as an argument, a traffic-related confrontation, a planned meeting, or under some other circumstances. Investigators therefore left one of the most important questions surrounding the shooting unanswered: what led to the gunfire that killed Hudson.
Although the circumstances initially appeared uncertain, police made an unusual point of saying that all parties believed to have been involved had been accounted for. LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said the people involved were being interviewed, indicating that detectives were not describing the case at that stage as a shooting in which an unidentified assailant had simply fled and disappeared. Authorities nevertheless did not publicly identify any of those people as a suspect or accuse anyone of intentionally killing Hudson. The LMPD Homicide Unit took responsibility for the investigation.
Hudson’s death became Louisville’s first reported homicide of 2022. It occurred immediately after an exceptionally violent year for the city, with Louisville having recorded 188 homicides by the end of 2021. The timing meant that only hours into the new year, investigators were already working another fatal shooting while the community was emerging from a year of record-setting violence.
Away from the circumstances of his death, Hudson’s obituary described a life marked by wide-ranging interests and close relationships. He was born February 18, 1982, and was known to relatives and friends as Thad. His family remembered him as intensely curious and passionate about learning, with interests that included economics and neurology as well as books covering numerous subjects. He enjoyed traveling, the outdoors, cooking, making ice cream, working out, movies, music, sports and spending time with family and friends. He was also an enthusiastic Las Vegas Raiders fan who became known as “Thaddaeus from the 502” when participating in Raiders-related discussions. Those memories presented a personal picture far removed from the brief police reports surrounding the violent final moments of his life.
Despite police saying that the people connected to the incident were accounted for and interviewed, publicly available reporting does not identify anyone as having been arrested for Hudson’s killing. No publicly reported suspect name, murder charge, indictment, trial, guilty plea, acquittal or conviction tied specifically to his death was located. The available reports also do not explain whether detectives ultimately determined that the shooting was criminal, justified, accidental, or otherwise declined for prosecution. As a result, the public record leaves the case with a significant unresolved gap: investigators apparently knew who the involved parties were from the beginning, but no publicly reported prosecution followed from the fatal encounter.
