On the afternoon of February 8, 2018, Nelson Lopez, a 36-year-old Hispanic male, arrived at his residence in the 8600 block of Bluebell Drive in the Okolona neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. Lopez and his girlfriend were returning home when they interrupted a burglary in progress. Upon pulling into their driveway, they observed a man and a woman exiting from the side of their house.
Instead of fleeing the scene immediately, the intruders entered a vehicle, and a dangerous pursuit ensued.
The suspects began chasing Lopez and his girlfriend, who were in their own car, through the streets of Louisville. During this vehicular pursuit, the male suspect, later identified as Duane E. Eades, leaned out of the window of the chasing vehicle and fired shots at the couple. One of the bullets struck Lopez in the back of the head. Despite the critical injury, the girlfriend managed to drive to a gas station on Shepherdsville Road to seek help, where they were met by police and emergency medical services. Lopez was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he fought for his life for over a week. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on February 16, 2018, eight days after the shooting.
Homicide detectives with the Louisville Metro Police Department launched an investigation, conducting interviews and gathering evidence that eventually linked the crime to 49-year-old Duane Eades. Police alleged that Eades had broken into the home and subsequently attacked the couple as they attempted to flee. In August 2018, nearly six months after the fatal encounter, authorities arrested Eades. He was charged with murder, wanton endangerment, and tampering with physical evidence. During his initial court appearance, a judge set his bond at $500,000, citing the serious nature of the allegations and his criminal history.
The legal proceedings continued for several years following the arrest. Court records indicate that Eades remained in custody and was eventually convicted in relation to the incident. On August 10, 2022, Eades was formally convicted on charges stemming from the 2018 indictment, including wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence, and was sentenced to prison. He is currently serving his sentence at a correctional facility in Kentucky, with an expected time to serve extending into the next decade.
