In Grand-Bay, Alabama, a summer barbecue among family and friends took a tragic turn on August 29, 2017, ending the life of Quinterrius Casher, a male resident of the area. What began as a day of casual get-together devolved into a fatal dispute between Casher and his cousin, Lewis Donterrio Wright.
Accounts from witnesses at the gathering paint a picture of a friendly atmosphere that soured over a seemingly trivial matter. Joking banter between Casher and Wright escalated into a heated argument. At one point during the verbal altercation, Casher retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and placed it on the trunk of the car. The argument appeared to subside for a short time, but soon reignited with increased intensity.
In a sudden and violent turn of events, Wright took Casher's gun and shot him. The act was witnessed by numerous people present at the barbecue. Despite the presence of many onlookers, the shooting proved to be fatal for Quinterrius Casher.
Following the incident, Lewis Donterrio Wright was arrested and charged in connection with the death of his cousin. The case proceeded to trial in the Mobile County Circuit Court, where Wright was found guilty of reckless manslaughter. For his role in the death of Quinterrius Casher, he was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Wright later appealed his conviction, but the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the original verdict, ensuring that he would serve his sentence. Funeral services for Quinterrius Casher were held in early September 2017.
