In the early morning hours of August 7, 2024, a violent encounter in Grand Bay, Alabama, claimed the life of 41-year-old Horace Eugene Sellers III, a man known affectionately to friends and family as “Bubba”. Sellers was shot in the lower back while in a vehicle with his girlfriend, who was also wounded in the attack. The pair managed to drive to a nearby Chevron gas station on Highway 90 to seek help, but Sellers succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the deadly ambush quickly pointed to a trio of suspects. Thomas Nickols Marshall, 35, and Jessie Darrell Brown, 32, were identified by the Mobile County Sheriff's Office as being involved. Both men were apprehended in Mississippi shortly after the shooting. Investigators believe Marshall was the one who fired the fatal shots. The motive for the shooting was described by the sheriff's office as a 'jealous love triangle,' with the surviving victim having had an on-again, off-again relationship with both Sellers and Marshall.
A third suspect, Britney Mentor, was arrested weeks later. Authorities allege that Mentor was in the vehicle with Marshall and Brown at the time of the shooting and admitted to providing the gun used in the homicide. She is also accused of hiding the weapon after the fact. All three suspects are facing charges of murder and attempted murder.
During a preliminary hearing, a judge determined there was enough evidence to send the case against Marshall and Mentor to a grand jury. The surviving victim testified during the hearing, recounting the terrifying moments of the attack. She revealed that she still has a bullet lodged in her neck, too dangerous for doctors to remove. A detective testified that surveillance footage from a residence captured a man believed to be Marshall exiting a truck and firing into the vehicle carrying Sellers and his girlfriend. The third defendant, Jessie Brown, is scheduled for a separate preliminary hearing.
