In the summer of 2015, a tragedy unfolded in the Fern Creek neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, forever altering the lives of two families. On the evening of July 30th, 16-year-old Desean Mitchell, a male who was about to enter his junior year at Southern High School, was fatally shot. The incident occurred on Hudson Lane, where Desean was with a group of friends.
He was a well-liked young man, described by his mother as silly, lovable, and respectful, with many friends.
According to a witness at the scene, the shooting was a tragic accident. The friend, who was not identified because he was a minor, stated that another friend had found a gun in the neighborhood. Believing the firearm was unloaded after removing the clip, the friend pointed it at Desean in a joking manner and pulled the trigger. A single gunshot wound to the head proved fatal for Desean. Neighbors rushed to his aid, performing CPR until emergency responders arrived. He was transported to University Hospital where he later died during surgery.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a 17-year-old friend of Desean's, Michael Williams, was arrested and charged with murder. The victim's mother expressed profound grief, stating she felt like a piece of her heart was gone, made even more difficult by the fact that her son and the alleged shooter had been friends for a decade. The case against Williams, who was initially charged as a juvenile, was later transferred to the adult court system after a grand jury indictment. He was held at the Louisville Metro Youth Detention Center following his arrest. The narrative that the shooting was a mistake was reiterated by a friend, who was upset by social media posts suggesting it was intentional.
