In the winter of 2018 in downtown Louisville, a conflict aboard a TARC bus escalated to a fatal conclusion for 42-year-old Michael Bennett. On December 23rd, an altercation broke out between Bennett and another passenger, identified as 65-year-old Lawrence Williamson. The dispute culminated as Williamson was exiting the bus at 4th and Market Streets, at which point he shot Bennett.
Emergency services responded to the scene, and Bennett was transported to the hospital with multiple
gunshot wounds. For weeks, he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on January 12, 2019. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed that his death was a result of the injuries sustained in the shooting. The incident, which began as a simple bus ride, had tragically transformed into a homicide investigation.
Following Bennett's death, the Louisville Metro Police Department arrested Lawrence Williamson and charged him with murder. Williamson was taken into custody and held at Metro Corrections. However, the legal proceedings that followed did not result in a conviction. In December 2021, a jury found Lawrence Williamson not guilty of the murder of Michael Bennett, and he was acquitted of the charge.
