On the night of August 17, 2020, tragedy struck in Louisville, Kentucky, when 16-year-old Black male Adrain Maddox-Bell lost his life in a violent sequence of events on New Cut Road. Adrain was traveling in a vehicle with his younger brother, Jaden Maddox, and two other individuals near Iroquois Park. According to witnesses, the incident began as a rolling shootout involving two cars exchanging gunfire while driving down the road.
The confrontation ended abruptly when the vehicle carrying Adrain and his brother crashed, while the second vehicle fled the scene.
Emergency responders arrived to find a chaotic and devastating scene. Adrain Maddox-Bell was pronounced dead, having succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound. His 15-year-old brother, Jaden, also died at the scene, though the coroner determined his cause of death was blunt force trauma sustained during the crash rather than gunfire. Jaden passed away just one day before his 16th birthday. Two other passengers in the vehicle were transported to the hospital in critical condition; one of the survivors, a 19-year-old who was driving, was shot multiple times and left paralyzed from the waist down.
In the months following the double fatality, the investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department Homicide Unit struggled to identify the perpetrators. By February 2021, six months after the incident, no arrests had been made, and police had not released the identities of any suspects. The case remained unsolved, leaving the grieving families of the two teenage brothers to plead publicly for anyone with information to come forward. Family members expressed their deep anguish over the lack of closure and the silence from the community, urging witnesses to break the "no snitching" culture to help bring justice for Adrain and Jaden.
