On the evening of June 27th, Jones was at North City Park in Opelousas when he was shot. First responders found him wounded but still alive and transported him to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced brain dead and passed away three days later, on June 30, 2023, at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center.

shooting led Opelousas police to a 14-year-old suspect. Authorities arrested the juvenile, who was subsequently charged with armed robbery and first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Jones. In the midst of their grief, Roderick Jones Jr.'s family made a selfless decision that would offer a chance at life to others. His mother, Taneisha Richard, chose to donate his organs. This act of generosity resulted in a Ville Platte woman, who had been on a transplant list for three years and shared a rare blood type with Jones, receiving a life-saving kidney. His family honored his memory with an honor walk as he was being transported for the organ donation, celebrating the life he gave to others even in his own death.
