On a Saturday afternoon in Opelousas, Louisiana, the life of 20-year-old Ryan'Trayvian Darby was cut short. On October 22, 2022, Darby was found lying in the 100 block of Academy Street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The Opelousas Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting.
The investigation quickly led to a person of interest. A warrant for second-degree murder was issued for 23-year-old Easton Shelvin, Jr.
In a turn of events, Shelvin surrendered to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office on the evening his warrant was made public. While one suspect was in custody, authorities continued to investigate the possibility of other individuals being involved in the fatal shooting.
The legal process moved forward, and on January 13, 2023, a St. Landry Parish Grand Jury indicted Easton Shelvin, Jr. on the charge of second-degree murder in connection with Darby's death. His formal arraignment was scheduled for February 16, 2023.
