In the late hours of a Wednesday in Opelousas, Louisiana, a domestic dispute escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving a family and community to grapple with the sudden loss of Jason Edwards, a 44-year-old Black male. On the evening of August 10, 2022, police responded to a call concerning a man who had been shot after an alleged home invasion on Halphen Street. Upon their arrival at the residence, officers discovered Edwards suffering from a single gunshot wound to his chest.
He succumbed to his injury at the scene.
Initial reports of a break-in quickly unraveled as investigators began to piece together the events of that night. The evidence soon pointed not to an outside intruder, but to a conflict within the home. The investigation determined that a domestic dispute had occurred prior to the shooting. The focus of the investigation turned to Niesha S. Charles, who was identified as the individual responsible for the fatal shot.
In the wake of the investigation, 31-year-old Niesha Charles was arrested and faced multiple charges, the most serious being second-degree murder. Further legal proceedings saw the case presented to a grand jury in St. Landry Parish. The grand jury returned a true bill, formally indicting Charles on the charge of second-degree murder for the death of Jason Edwards. Additionally, she was indicted for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Following the indictment, Charles was scheduled for arraignment to answer to the charges brought against her.
