In the early hours of a Wednesday in Opelousas, Louisiana, the life of 19-year-old Donnie Ray Sam, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On June 18, 2014, Sam was found in a vacant lot in the 900 block of Truman Street, having been shot multiple times at close range. The Opelousas Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, seeking to bring justice for the young man known affectionately as "Deedy."
The investigation soon focused on someone
unexpectedly close to Sam: his 19-year-old friend, Traylan Batiste. A week after Sam's death, Batiste was taken into custody on a charge unrelated to the murder. However, he was always considered a prime suspect in the shooting. Investigators believed the motive for the killing was robbery, and their suspicions were bolstered by the discovery of DNA evidence at the crime scene that reportedly linked Batiste to the murder of his friend.
The case against Batiste solidified when a St. Landry Parish Grand Jury handed down a first-degree murder indictment. This legal step signified that there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial. With the indictment, Batiste faced the possibility of a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the chance of parole or even the death penalty, a decision that would ultimately rest with a jury.
