On a Sunday afternoon, the bustling Fayette Mall in Lexington, Kentucky, became the scene of a tragedy that cut short the life of 17-year-old Kenneth Wayne Bottoms Jr., a Black male. On August 23, 2020, what began as a verbal altercation near the Bath & Body Works store quickly and violently escalated. Surveillance footage later showed Bottoms and some acquaintances following another young man through the mall, leading to a heated argument.
During this confrontation, the other individual, identified as 19-year-old Xavier Hardin, pulled out a gun and fired, striking Bottoms. The single gunshot proved to be fatal.
The sound of gunfire sent shoppers running for cover, creating a chaotic scene inside the shopping center. In the immediate aftermath, two of Bottoms' associates, 18-year-olds Nasir Lyons and Cion Townsend, were seen removing evidence from his body before fleeing the area. Bottoms was rushed to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that evening. The shooting also resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to two innocent bystanders, a 41-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, who were caught in the crossfire.
The investigation led police to identify Xavier Hardin as the shooter, and he was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and two counts of assault. Lyons and Townsend were also apprehended and faced charges of tampering with physical evidence. As the case moved through the legal system, Hardin eventually reached a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to lesser charges, including manslaughter and assault. The charge against Nasir Lyons was ultimately dropped. In the wake of the tragedy, the family of Kenneth Wayne Bottoms Jr. filed a lawsuit against the owners of Fayette Mall, raising concerns about the security measures in place at the time of the fatal encounter.
