In the winter of 2020, the life of 17-year-old Jamya Latrice Lewis, a Black female, was tragically cut short on the streets of Louisville, Kentucky. On the night of December 2nd, gunshots rang out in the 2800 block of South Third Street, near the University of Louisville campus. When Louisville Metro Police Department officers arrived around 11 p.m., they found Jamya in critical condition, having been shot in the head.
Despite being rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital, her
injuries proved fatal, and she succumbed to them shortly after 11:30 p.m. Her death marked the first homicide in Louisville for the month of December in a year that had already seen a record-breaking level of violence. Jamya was a full-time student at Western Kentucky University where she was pursuing a degree in nursing. Those who knew her described her as a lively, outgoing, and ambitious young woman with a bright future. She was known for her infectious smile and caring personality, and was deeply loyal to her family and friends.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit opened an investigation into her murder. However, despite appeals to the public for information, no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made in connection with her killing. The investigation into Jamya's death remains open as her family and community continue to hope for justice and a resolution to this senseless act of violence.
